Replacement Named for Miquelon

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – A replacement has been named for Miriam Miquelon, who resigned Monday from her post as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

Attorney General John Ashcroft has authorized deputy U.S. Attorney Richard Byrne to be a temporary replacement for Miquelon, who quit after fewer than 11 months on the job.

A federal judge in Southern Illinois says Miquelon resigned because the Justice Department is investigating her. In a statement, Chief U.S. District Judge G. Patrick Murphy said his court was not informed of the particulars of the investigation, other than it necessitated Miquelon's resignation.

Miquelon says there is no investigation, and maintains her resignation was a personal decision.

A Justice Department spokeswoman would not say whether or not there is an investigation underway.
