Report: Gephardt Won't Seek Re-election in 2004

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – As Dick Gephardt joins an increasingly crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls, a report says that win
or lose, he will not be running for Congress again.

Citing campaign sources, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Web site stltoday.com reports today that Gephardt will not seek
re-election to the House in 2004, regardless of the success or
failure of his 2004 presidential bid.

Gephardt's Washington office declined comment.

In fact, the article notes that one of Gephardt's close local allies, state Senator Steve Stoll of Festus, announced today that he will seek election as Gephardt's successor.

A state Democratic party spokesman says he knows nothing about any plans by Gephardt not to seek re-election.
