Tamaroa, Ill. – Almost a thousand residents hope to return today to their homes in Tamaroa, Ill., about 75 miles southeast of St. Louis.
A Illinois Central-Canadian National fright train was carrying hazardous chemicals including vinyl chloride, formaldehyde, and hydrochloric acid derailed in the middle of town yesterday, forcing their evacuation.
The state of Illinois sent emergency management officials to the site to help with the cleanup.
The accident caused a fire that was put out yesterday afternoon. No injuries were reported. Many people reportedly spent the night with friends, but the Red Cross was also on hand to provide food and shelter for displaced residents.
The accident also hampered Amtrak service to Carbondale, a popular route for college students. Travelers were put on buses for the last part of their trip.
