Rice, Federal Officials Tour Abram Building

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Louis – St. Louis homeless advocate Larry Rice Tuesday made his case to federal officials for a downtown homeless shelter at the Abram Federal Building.

Rice toured the facility with staff from two federal agencies, who must decide whether his plan is feasible.

Rice says he showed the officials he's ready and able to use the building.

"They want to see that we're going to adequately use the facility to help the homeless," Rice said. "And that's what we did; we went through the whole building. They asked me questions, asked how we're going to do various things, and they received answers and they seemed satisfied with those answers."

City leaders say they need to put a parking garage on the site in order to reopen the Kiel Opera House.

The federal officials declined to speak with the media, but are expected to make a decision next month.
