River Security is a Priority

By B. Raack, KWMU

St. Louis, MO – With the weather warming up, the Coast Guard and the US Army Corps of Engineers are keeping close tabs on security on the Mississippi and Illinois Rivers.

While the Corps is restricting access at many of its locks and dams, the Coast Guard is stepping up patrols. Lt. Fred Stipkowitz says guardsman are checking in with both recreational and commercial boaters.

We communicate with them via radio or person to person," he said. "We find out if there's been any suspicious activities, how their trip is going, just general communications. Let people know that we're out there watching.

Stipkowitz says security brochures being given out by the Coast Guard brought in several tips on suspicious activities and all have been checked out.
