CLAYTON, Mo. –
A suburban St. Louis man nicknamed the "Boonie Hat Bandit" for his robberies of 12 banks has been sentenced to more than two decades in prison.
KSDK-TV reports that 46-year-old Donald Keith Giammanco was sentenced Friday in St. Louis County to 10 years on two counts, which will run consecutively, and 15 years on the remaining counts, which will run concurrently.
Giammanco was previously sentenced to more than six years on federal charges.
Giammanco was dubbed the "Boonie Hat Bandit" because of the military-style, floppy-brimmed "Boonie" hat worn during some of the robberies.
Authorities say he made off with amounts ranging from $1,300 at one bank to $26,000 at another. The robberies were in St. Louis and St. Charles counties.
Giammanco claimed he needed money to pay bills after losing his job.
