New Orleans, La. – The lawyer for an Illinois pilot who was fined for mistakenly bombing Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan plans to file a lawsuit against the Air Force over thg public release of documents in the case.

Attorney Charles Gittins says Air Force lawyers had previously promised not to release the document and had violated Schmidt's privacy in doing so.

Gittins said Major Harry Schmidt of the Illinois Air National Guard will also appeal the ruling. It said Schmidt "acted shamefully" on an April 2002 mission that left four Canadians dead and eight wounded.

Lieutenant General Bruce Carlson ruled that Schmidt exhibited "arrogance and a lack of flight discipline."

Carlson's reprimand was released to the news media on Tuesday.

Schmidt is from the central Illinois town of Sherman, near Springfield, but grew up in the St. Louis area.
