St. Louis, MO – A 74-year-old woman has become the second St. Louis resident to die in the ongoing heat wave.
The Department of Health confirmed the death Friday. The woman, whose name was not released, lived in the 5500 block of Chamberlain on the city's north side. She had air conditioning at her house, city officials said, but did not turn it on. The city's first heat death was a 68-year-old man who also had working air conditioning that he had not turned on.
In a statement, Mayor Francis Slay urged residents to check on neighbors. The city has cooling centers available for residents who do not have air conditioning or are concerned about the cost.
An excessive heat warning is in effect until 9pm Saturday.
