St. Louis, MO – The U.S. military has wrapped up an almost four month investigation of Missouri State Senator Jon Dolan, saying did not knowingly engage in wrongdoing when he left his National Guard mission in Cuba last fall to cast a crucial vote for concealed weapons.
But they add he did break the rule that bars Reservists from carrying out political office functions while on a tour of duty.
Pentagon officials say they'll use the matter to clarify the rules over Guard members in public office. That could affect thousands of people in the country who serve but who also are elected officials.
Military officials acknowledge that the rules Dolan violated were not clear or widely known. Dolan cast the deciding vote in the state Senate that cleared the way for concealed guns to be legal in Missouri. That law is currently not in effect because it's tied up in court.
