SIUE Tries Again for Golf Course

Edwardsville, Ill. – Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville is trying again to build a nine-hole golf course on its campus.

The school made a similar attempt in the 1980s; now officials say the growing number of students on campus increases the need for more recreational opportunities.

But five other golf courses in the Edwardsville area are unhappy about possible competition from a university. Another group opposed is one of radio-controlled airplane operators, who would lose their airfield if the course is built.

There are about 3,000 students on campus. The proposal also is stirring up controversy because it would displace an outdoor astronomy center that was originally built as a memorial to one of the university's physics professors.
