Officials say a small plane crashed in St. Louis County early Saturday morning, killing both people aboard.

A nearby resident reported hearing a loud crash in the area west of Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield, according to the St. Louis County Police Department.

The victims were identified as 41-year-old, Shiv Patil  and his seven year old Daughter Sonia Patil from Chesterfield, MO.

According to the St. Louis County Police Department:

The two reportedly departed Spirit Airport in a Cirrus SR-22 around 4:50 A.M. destined for Texas, with a final destination of Arizona. The plane went down just West of Spirit Airport several hundred yards into the wood-line on Howell Island leaving a large debris field.

Police say the victims’ family has been notified and the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration will perform independent investigations of the incident.
