Some Illinois License Plates are Defective

By AP/KWMU

Springfield, Ill. – Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says some new license plates might be defective.

He says the plastic coating on a small number of plates is separated from the steel, which could create a bubble effect around the numbers and letters.

The plates will be replaced at no cost; only about 100 have been so far found with the problem.

More than 9 million new license plates have been issued since 2001.

White says he's formed a committee to study the issue. And he adds that the state's contract guarantees that the plates will be replaced at no cost to vehicles owners or taxpayers.

Anyone whose plates have this defect are asked to notify the Secretary of State by calling 1-800-252-8980 or by clicking
