St. Charles Voters Deciding on Convention Center Today

By Matt Sepic, KWMU

St. Charles, Mo. – Voters in the City of Saint Charles will decide Tuesday whether to build a new convention center.

Promoters say the $32.5 million facility will pay for itself and be a boon to the local economy.

Roger Pryor is chairman of the County Convention and Sports Facilities Authority. He says they've done their homework and that it will be successful.

Opponents of the plan are citing the limited success of such facilities as the Goldenrod Showboat and Family Arena in their case. They say any convention center should be financed privately.

The vote is non-binding, but city council members say they'll respect voters' wishes.
