St. Joseph, MO – The state is considering an offer from a western Missouri company to take over Amtrak passenger rail service from Kansas City to St. Louis.

MO-DOT says it's only studying the idea of having the St. Joseph company take over the rail service. The state has not solicited formal proposals.

The company is Herzog Transit Services, it operates commuter rail in California, Texas and Florida and maintains railroad tracks in other states.

Officials recently said Amtrak service between Kansas City and St. Louis could be threatened without more state funding.

Herzog says it could operate the route for less money.
