St. Louis exports nearly $5 billion in goods

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – St. Louis was in the top 25 metropolitan areas in exporting goods during the first half of 2007.

The region exported $4.9 billion in goods, and that brought St. Louis to the 23rd spot nationally.

Assistant U.S. Commerce Secretary David Bohigian is a St. Louis native and said the Commerce Department cannot predict how the sale of Anheuser-Busch and a planned shut-down of one Chrysler plant in Fenton will affect those numbers, but he said trade will likely remain strong.

"I would love to be able to come back in six months and be able to say you've topped $5 billion and cracked the top 20. As a native, I think St. Louis has the workforce, the education, and the clusters here they need to do that," Bohigian said.

The top exports for the St. Louis metropolitan area were chemicals and transportation equipment followed by crop production.
