St. Louis, MO – Several St. Louis politicians are asking Governor Nixon to stay the execution of Reggie Clemons. Clemons was sentenced to death as an accomplice to the 1991 rape and murder of Robin and Julie Kerry and is scheduled to be put to death on June 17th.
Clemons death would be the second execution in Missouri in less than one month.
State Representative Jamilah Nasheed asserts that Clemons' confession came only after he was beaten by police officers.
"The evidence is not valid and we truly believe that the evidence has been tainted and there needs to be either a retrial or a life sentence," says Nasheed.
St. Louis Congressman William Lacy Clay has also asked Attorney General Chris Koster to reopen the case.
Reditt Hudson of the ACLU says there is more than enough evidence to suggest the rape charge was contrived and Clemons' confessions were made only after he was beaten by police.
"This is a case of clear miscarriage of justice and a case that the governor should use his position to first stop the execution and then reopen so that justice and truth can come on out," says Hudson.
The ACLU notes that Koster made a campaign promise to look into the Clemon's trial if he was elected.
