St. Louis Prosecutors Narrow Possible Clergy Abuse

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – St. Louis prosecutors say they have five to seven "promising" cases of alleged sexual abuse of minors by clergymen.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office says those are the strongest of 35 to 40 active files on clergymen, though the cases may not lead to charges.

In March, Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce asked people who were abused to call her office after disclosures of abuse allegations against St. Louis Archdiocese priests.

Prosecutors say 59 current or former clergymen were mentioned; investigations reduced the list.

The St. Louis County prosecuting attorney's office received a dozen allegations and hasn't heard anything since referring them to police. The St. Charles County prosecutor is investigating one case.
