St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra’s New Season

The St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra opens its 2012-2013 season in a concert Friday night in Powell Hall,  but the young musicians and their leaders have been hard at work for months.

During the summer, Jessica Ingraham was named as the Youth Orchestra Manager.

Major changes also were instituted to enhance the experience of the musicians.  In addition to the usual rehearsals, the musicians now also attend weekly 90-minute “Beyond Rehearsal” sessions which include sectional coaching by St. Louis Symphony members as well sessions on the business of music such as marketing/public relations, online presence and getting into college and graduate school.  The additional sessions emphasize the concept of the “whole musician.”

The other major change this season is tickets to the concerts are free.

Jessica Ingraham and Co-Assistant Concertmaster Hava Polinksy were host Steve Potter’s guests.  They discussed the audition process, the value of the additional sessions, the concerto competition and the program of the opening concert which is directed by guest conductor Steven Jarvi.
