St. Louis – About 100 St. Louis school employees protested outside City Hall Wednesday to voice their anger over what they say is Mayor Francis Slay's lack of support for the city school district.
The union representing most city teachers and staff wants the mayor to take a more active public role in helping to resolve the district's financial crisis.
Slay was supposed to meet with the union Wednesday, but later cancelled. That action raised the ire of many on the picket line, including this teacher who chose not to give his name.
"It's clear that he supported this outsourcing and cutting the wages of anybody who actually does the job," the man said. "The executives all got 300 or 400 percent increases; we got nothing, which means the kids got nothing."
A Slay spokesman says the mayor is committed to continuing a community dialogue on the district.
Slay will meet with the union on April 23.
