St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis County Council is considering extending a moratorium on new trash transfer stations.
Fred Weber, Inc. wants to build one on a quarry site in Oakville. That's drawn heavy opposition from area residents.
County Councilman Skip Mange says the region needs to look at the big picture before approving new garbage projects. "We have a problem," Mange said Tuesday. "We have to have a way to handle the trash.
"You know people put their trash out on the street, and they expect it to be picked up. They lose track of where it goes from there. It's got to go somewhere. It's got to be handled. And you've got to have that done in a way that's economical to you."
Mange says a consultant is studying long term trash needs for the county.
An attorney for Fred Weber says the company has no position on a pending bill within the council that would extend the moratorium.
