Stolen million-dollar artwork headed back to local owner

By AP/St. Louis Public Radio

ST. LOUIS – The FBI says a painting valued at roughly $1 million is headed back to its rightful St. Louis owner, more than six years after it was stolen from his home.

Authorities say burglars took the original, 1926 untitled Juan Gris painting in April 2004 from Clifton Hyatt's home.

The painting later turned up in southern Florida in the possession of Robert DiBartolo, a Fort Pierce, Fla., man who last month was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison after pleading guilty to the sale or receipt of stolen goods.

Earlier this year, Hyatt reviewed photographs of the recovered painting and identified it as his.

The FBI in St. Louis says it will host a news conference Wednesday, when the painting will be returned to Hyatt.
