St. Louis, MO – Students, teachers and administrators are furious over plans to shut down and consolidate nearly 30 schools. The three members of the state-appointed board that oversees the St. Louis Public Schools got an earful Wednesday night in the first of two public meetings on the plans for school closures.
Students from Gateway High School demonstrated outside the meeting at Roosevelt High.
Chip Clatto, Gateway's assistant principal, told the board that the closure would mean the end of programs that teach students to work on everything from aircraft to robots.
The board plans to shut down the schools because of low enrollment and a budget shortfall of $36 million.
The next meeting will be on Saturday at Vashon High School.
