Summer concerts: It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a road trip

Jun 11, 2015

Ok folks, it’s a good weekend for a road trip. We’ve got Superman, French Heritage and a celebration of Route 66.

Too bad you aren’t faster than a speeding bullet because it takes about three hours to drive to Metropolis, Ill. But if you are a fan of the man from Krypton, June 11-14 is the time to make the trip for this year’s Superman Celebration. A lot of events are tied to the movies or television shows, as might be expected, but Friday includes such things as the “Fortress of Jellotude” eating contest and the Superman vs. Batman tug of war. Oh, and of course, music will be available in the evenings.

If the Ohio River is too far, head down the Mississippi to Ste. Genevieve, which will be having its French Heritage Festival on Saturday. As the website notes, "There will be music, dance, storytelling, French cuisine and other refreshments, a wine and beer tent, re-enactments, promenades (parades), and French Colonial architecture tours."

You can stay in the area and dream of travel at Edwardsville’s Route 66 Festival June 12-13.Vintage cars will abound and the music includes Gone Country, Well Hungarians, Happenstance and Hurricane Ruth.

Or bring your chairs, blankets and, perhaps, some refreshments and pick an event or two from our Big List.

We are looking for other free, outdoor concert series to add. We have contacted some and will get the information onto the chart as soon as possible. Check back weekly for information about upcoming concerts.
