Sutherland Retrial Cost Illinois nearly $2 Million

By AP/KWMU

Mount Vernon, Ill. – The Illinois treasurer's office estimates that the retrial in the Amy Schulz murder case cost taxpayers more than $1.8 million.

A jury in St. Clair County found Cecil Sutherland guilty Friday in the ten-year-old girl's rape and murder. Her body was found in 1987 not far from her home in the southern Illinois community of Kell.

Sutherland was convicted in 1989, but the Illinois Supreme Court granted him a new trial, saying his defense was "inadequate."

For Sutherland's retrial, state records show his defense attorney billed the state's Capital Litigation Trust Fund for more than $1 million.

A private investigator for the defense submitted nearly $500,000 in bills.

Jefferson County State's Attorney Gary Duncan says prosecuting Sutherland cost more than $225,000.
