Talent, Akin appear at rally in support of pledge

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, Mo. – Congressman Todd Akin and Senator Jim Talent are rallying support today for legislation aimed at keeping the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Republican lawmakers appeared at a rally this morning in St. Charles along with veterans, scouts and local politicians.

Both men have introduced bills that would guarantee the rights of school children to say "under God" while reciting the pledge.

The bills stem from a federal appeals court decision last June forbidding the teacher-led pledge in public schools. A panel of the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco held the salute
unconstitutional because of the expression of religion in the phrase "one nation under God."

The Bush administration is appealing to the Supreme Court.
