Tamaroa, Ill. Residents Wait to Return Home
Tamaroa, Ill. – The residents of a small town about 80 miles southeast of St. Louis hope to find out today just when they can go home.
More than a thousand people were evacuated Sunday after a freight train derailed in the middle of Tamaroa, Ill., and spilled spilled hazardous material.
The Canadian National Freight train was carrying materials including hydrochloric acid, fermaldehyde, vinyl chloride, and methanol. They can be toxic if not handled correctly. Twenty-one cars on the train derailed.
There were no injuries; the residents have stayed with friends, in motels, or in a Red Cross shelter since the accident.
