Jefferson City, MO – Missouri Governor Bob Holden said Wednesday morning he will veto another budget bill, this time for Department of
Social Services.
The governor says the cuts passed by the Republican-led Legislature could deny Medicaid health care coverage to thousands of low-income Missourians.
Holden first announced his veto intentions at the Capitol this morning; he then planned to fly to Cape Girardeau and New Madrid, areas with higher percentages of residents dependent upon Medicaid.
The latest veto pledge comes the day after he vowed a veto on the higher education budget. On Monday, Holden said he would veto the mental health budget. On Thursday, he's expected to announce a veto of the budget for elementary and secondary education.
The vetoes all mean there will be a special session; Holden has yet to set a date for lawmakers to return to Jefferson City to rework the numbers. Republican leaders have said in the past, though, that if there is a special session, they'll end up passing the same exact budget again.
