UM Tuition Lawsuit Will Go Straight to MO Supreme Court

By AP/KWMU

Jefferson City, MO – The Missouri Supreme Court will hear the case of whether the University of Missouri illegally charged students millions in tuition from 1986 to 2001.

In December, a St. Louis County judge ruled it had, citing an 18-72 law that mandated free education for Missourians.

The appeal is skipping one court and going straight to Jefferson City because it involves the constitutionality of a state law.

The 1872 law was overturned in 2001. The St. Louis County judge who ruled in December said tuition, by any name, should not have been charged to Missourians.

The judge has yet to decide possible remedies.
