Jefferson City, Mo. – Unemployed workers in Missouri will soon learn if they qualify for extensions under federal legislation signed this week by President Obama.
The new law extends benefits to those who have been out of work for six months or longer. Amy Susan with the Missouri Department of Labor and Industrial Relations advises those whose benefits have lapsed to be patient.
"Please continue to file your weekly claims, and we will be identifying those individuals that we deem eligible for benefits, and mailing them further instructions on how to apply for this open extension," Susan said.
Around 139,000 Missourians are currently receiving unemployment benefits. Susan says more than 60,000 have exhausted their benefits since the end of May.
