Voting equipment checks widened

By Maria Hickey, KWMU

St. Louis, MO. – Missouri will do a wider audit of voting equipment following November's election.

Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced Tuesday that the audit will increase from one percent to five percent of precincts.

Spokeswoman Laura Egerdal says local election official conduct the manual audits.

"That means they go in and hand count the ballots and they hand count the paper trail of the voting machines and then compare those totals with the electronic totals and make sure they match up," Egerdal said.

Egerdal says the Secretary of State wanted to widen the audit because of an expected record turn-out for the upcoming election.
