Wash. Post: Bush May Skip St. Louis Debate

By KWMU

Washington, D.C. – The Washington Post reports this morning (Wednesday) that President Bush may not debate Democrat John Kerry at Washington University in St. Louis.

Party officials have told the newspaper that Bush's negotiating team plans to resist what would be the second of three debates. (Charles Gibson, of ABC's Good Morning America, was slated to moderate the debate)

Wash. U. hosted Presidential debates in 1992 and 2000. The '92 debate marked the first televised Presidential debate featuring three candidates (Clinton, Gore, and Perot). The '00 debate took place the day after then-Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash.

The campus was also slated to host a debate in 1996, but the event was scrapped because then-incumbent President Bill Clinton also only accepted just two debates.
