Wash. U. Study Suggests Liposuction Pitfalls

By AP/KWMU

St. Louis, MO – Washington University researchers say liposuction doesn't appear to lower the risks of diabetes and heart disease the way normal dieting does.

The findings are in today's (Thursday's) New England Journal of Medicine, and surprised researchers who figured removing fat surgically would mean a healthier body chemistry.

The operation trims away fat, but didn't reduce the size of fat cells, which normal dieting does. It's those smaller cells that can mean a healthier body chemistry.

NPR's Patricia Neighmond prepared a report on this study for Morning Edition. To hear the report, click here.
