Washington Park mayor killed

St. Louis, MO. – Two men are in custody in the shooting of a Metro East mayor.

Washington Park Mayor John Thornton was shot twice in the chest early Thursday morning. He later died at a hospital.

Detective Kim McAfee says the shooter was in the car with Thornton and shot him at close range.

The car then crashed into a tree.

Witnesses told police the shooter limped to a waiting car and fled.

Police arrested the driver of the getaway car. Another man later turned himself in.

Police have not confirmed whether the second suspect was the shooter.

No charges have been filed yet.
