Community collaboration celebrates Meacham Park history

Marsha Coplon and Jeane Vogel are working to collect oral histories from Meacham Park residents.
Kelly Moffitt | St. Louis Public Radio

A year and a half ago, the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, Springboard to Learning and Webster Arts formed a collaboration to document and celebrate the history of Meacham Park.

On Wednesday’s St. Louis on the Air, host Don Marsh was joined by Marsha Coplon, education director for The Rep, and Jeane Vogel, executive director of Webster Arts, to discuss the Meacham Park Celebration that is the culmination of the collaboration.

Last Spring, Nipher Middle School students with the help of a Springboard to Learning Teaching Artist conducted interviews with Meacham Park residents and others who had stories about the historic neighborhood. The Rep and Webster Arts took the oral histories to area artists who created the art, poetry, theater and dance performances that will be featured at the celebration.

After the performance on September 25, the art will be displayed throughout the area. The project also produced a book that will be available at area libraries. A fifteen minute documentary will serve as a guide for future collaborations by other organizations.
