St. Louis, MO – The Department of Energy is soliciting public input tonight on a proposed plan to remediate contaminated groundwater at the Weldon Spring site in St. Charles County. The plan would require officials to record how contaminants such as uranium and trichloroethylene break down through natural biological processes. The DOE's Pam Thompson says the site's current means of monitoring the flow of contaminated groundwater safeguards the public:
"We are not releasing contaminants to the public that's not protective of their health and the environment," Thompson said. " We want to make sure that that stays protective, and the way to do that is to make sure the contaminant plume behaves the way we predict it to and that's why we want to propose monitored natural attenuation."
The meeting is part of a required 30-day public review period. If approved, the groundwater plan could be implemented by next summer.
