Ballpark Village gets final state approval

Seven years and two false starts later, the long-delayed Ballpark Village has gotten approval from the state of Missouri.

Today's nod from the Missouri Development Finance Board allows the St. Louis Cardinals and the site's developer, the Cordish Companies, to sell $17 million worth of bonds, which will fund the infrastructure at the 10-acre site.

Cardinals' Ballpark Village could break ground by end of year

Officials with the St. Louis Cardinals say construction should begin on the much-delayed Ballpark Village by this coming fall.

The $100 million project received support Thursday from the Missouri Downtown Economic Stimulus Authority—known as MODESA.

MODESA’s support frees up $17 million in bonds set to expire by the end of the year—a fact which has the Cardinals, their developer Cordish Co. and the City of St. Louis moving quickly to clear these last few hurdles.

This is a story that may sound familiar to some of you.

The St. Louis Cardinals and developer Cordish Cos. will step in front of a city agency on July 5 to outline their plans for Ballpark Village, the 10-acre site north of Busch Stadium.

Panel to hit "restart" on Ballpark Village

Remember Ballpark Village? The multi-million dollar development at the site of the old Busch Stadium that was supposed to rival Kansas City's Power and Light District? (And is in fact a product of the same developer, Cordish Companies.) The development that in 2008 became not-so-affectionately known as Lake DeWitt? That was supposed to be partially completed by the All Star Game and instead got turned into a parking lot and softball field?

Well, kind of like a cat, the project lives again. And this time, Ald. Phyllis Young says she thinks something substantial will get built.
