New Washington U. Provost Likes Being 'Mr. Inside'

Seated in his office on the second floor of Brookings Hall on the eastern edge of the Washington University campus, Provost Holden Thorp has a pretty good metaphor for what his job entails compared with that of university Chancellor Mark Wrighton.

“You can see the chancellor’s office is across the hall,” Thorp said in a recent interview. “His office faces the park and the Arch and downtown. My office is on this side and faces out to the old quad.

UNC Chancellor To Become WUSTL Provost

The chancellor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill is leaving to become provost of Washington University in St. Louis.

Holden Thorp said in an email Monday to students, faculty and staff, that the new job would allow him to teach and do research while serving as chief academic officer of Washington University.

Forty-eight-year-old Thorp announced in September he would step down as chancellor at the end of the academic year. He said he would return to the classroom.
