"Watch the signs, get off your cell phones, drive your car" is message during Work Zone Safety Week

Officials with the Missouri and Illinois Departments of Transportation are joining efforts to highlight Work Zone Safety Week, which begins today and runs through Friday.

With the start of spring in St. Louis, crews will be increasing construction efforts, patching potholes and resurfacing roads.

Ed Hassinger is district engineer with MoDOT. He says last year in St. Louis there were 2,500 accidents in work zones and eight people died.

High-speed rail hosts last open house

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will host the last open house tomorrow to answer questions about the high-speed rail project between St. Louis and Chicago.

The public meetings, which began March 1, are aimed at answering questions about a recent environmental study. The study evaluates the impact of adding a second track to the high-speed route.

How much will that DUI or seat belt violation cost you? New data out in Illinois, enforcement up

Illinois law enforcement officials will be increasing their efforts over the holiday season by targeting drivers who are intoxicated and those not wearing seatbelts. (Julie Bierach, St. Louis Public Radio)

Of course, you should never drink and drive or be in a moving car without wearing a seatbelt, but Illinois motorists will want to be especially mindful this holiday season.

Illinois State Police and local law enforcement are stepping up enforcement on impaired drivers and unbelted motorists this holiday season in what they're callingĀ  the "You Drink and Drive, You Lose/Click It or Ticket Holiday Crackdown."
