The devestating May 22 tornado that ripped through Joplin contributed to a loss of 9,400 jobs in the city. Gov. Jay Nixon will be in Joplin Tuesday to announce an initiative for home rebuilding.

Joplin tornado contributes to unemployment

Missouri officials say the May 22 tornado in Joplin contributed to the net loss of 13,000 jobs in the state. Joplin alone lost 9,400 jobs in June. The State Department of Economic Development says Missouri’s jobless rate fell from 8.9 percent in May to 8.8 percent in June. In recovery efforts, Gov. Jay Nixon will make a speech Tuesday in Joplin to announce what he calls a “major initiative to address both the near-term and long-term housing needs.”

Nixon pledges home-rebuilding aid in Joplin

Gov. Jay Nixon will travel to Joplin today to make an announcement regarding home-rebuilding aid. Thousands of homes were destroyed in the May 22 tornado.

Mo. Gov. Jay Nixon says the state will play a long-term role in rebuilding housing in Joplin after the deadly May 22 tornado.

Nixon will travel to Joplin today to announce what he describes as a "major initiative to address both the near-term and long-term housing needs."

He says it will involve both federal and state resources to support home construction.

The tornado killed 159 people and destroyed thousands of homes while wiping out a large section of the city.

Three women, 10 men vying for seat on Mo. Supreme Court

Thirteen people have applied to fill a vacancy on the Missouri Supreme Court.

Thirteen people have submitted applications to fill a soon-to-be-open seat on the Missouri Supreme Court.

Nixon will let late-term abortion restrictions take effect without signature

Mo. Gov. Jay Nixon says he will let a controversial measure that puts further restrictions on abortions performed after 20 weeks become law without his signature.

The state already bans late-term abortions unless the life or health of the mother is in danger. That includes mental health.
