Mo. lawmakers react to MOSIRA law being struck down

Many Missouri lawmakers are expressing disappointment over Tuesday's ruling that struck down the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act, more commonly known as "MOSIRA."

The measure would have used revenues generated by a group of science and high-tech companies to create a pool to lure more such companies to Missouri and to keep the ones already here from leaving.  State Senator Luann Ridgeway (R, Smithville) is not happy with the ruling.

The Republican primary for lieutenant governor of Missouri may get even more crowded.

State Sen. Luann Ridgeway, a Republican from the Kansas City area, said Monday she is "very committed" to the race, though she has not officially declared her candidacy.

Community activists launch campaign to combat right-to-work, preserve state min. wage, in Mo.

Community activists and labor interests in Missouri are getting an early start on combating efforts next year to cap the state’s minimum wage and turn Missouri into a right-to-work state.

Lawmakers failed to freeze the state’s minimum wage during this year’s session, and the right-to-work issue only got a few hours of debate with no vote.

Mo. Senator proposes flat tax

State Senator Luann Ridgeway (R, Smithville) wants Missouri to dump its state income tax in favor of a consumption tax.

With less than a month to go in this year’s legislative session, another proposal is being made to overhaul Missouri’s tax structure.

The resolution would replace the state’s income tax with a sales tax -- and if passed by lawmakers, it would go before Missouri voters next year.

Missouri lawmakers are expected to debate controversial right-to-work legislation this week.

One bill would prohibit closed-union shops, in which all employees must pay fees for union representation. The Senate sponsor is Republican Luann Ridgeway of Smithville.

Some Republican senators want to prohibit union-only work places, which they contend could deter some businesses from locating in Missouri.

Missouri businesses currently have the option of requiring union fees from employees.

Legislation filed Thursday by Republican Sen. Jason Crowell, of Cape Girardeau, would refer the union issue to voters next year.
