Sister Harriet Padberg: Pioneer In Music Therapy, Longtime Teacher

Sister Harriet Ann Padberg, a gifted musician and composer, who spent the last 40 years of her long life advocating music as a therapeutic way of improving the lives of people with physical and mental disabilities, found joy listening to Mozart’s music in her last hour.    

The lifelong St. Louisan died Jan. 2 of complications after a fall and hip break. She was 91.

“We were playing Mozart, she loved Mozart, it was very peaceful,” her sister Peggy Padberg McGarry, of Houston, said.

NCAA Taps St. Louis To Host Eight Championships

The NCAA is bringing eight sports championships to the St. Louis area over the next five years. The collegiate athletic association announced a package of playoffs Wednesday that St. Louis will host between 2015 and 2018.

The St. Louis Sports Commission prepared the city’s successful bids. Vice President of Events Chris Roseman says NCAA athletes will be competing at numerous venues across the metro area.

Instruments of Healing: Fighting cancer with medicine and music

At first glance, the Saint Louis University Cancer Center and the St. Louis Symphony seem to have vastly different missions. One seeks to provide the best care possible following an often devastating diagnosis. The other seeks to spread the beauty of music wherever it can.

But a unique collaboration looks to combine those two missions as often as possible in the region's first comprehensive music therapy program – to the benefit of both organizations and the people they serve.
