MoDOT to Close Eastbound Lanes of Blanchette Bridge This Weekend

Beginning at 8 p.m. this evening, three eastbound lanes on the Blanchette Bridge will be closed.

The lanes will be re-opened by 5 a.m. on Sunday. At least two eastbound lanes will stay open to traffic throughout the weekend.

Linda Wilson Horn with the Missouri Department of Transportation says they do expect backups as motorists coming from St. Charles County try to get across the bridge.

“We are restriping the bridge to get ready for what will be a major impact starting two weekends from now," said Wilson Horn.

Illinois and Missouri officials appear to agree on a series of phased upgrades to the Poplar Street Bridge.

The plan would add a third eastbound I-64 lane over the bridge, as well as provide a two-lane onramp from northbound I-55.

MoDOT District Engineer Ed Hassinger says the $80 million in upgrades will go a long way toward smoothing the flow of traffic over the Mississippi.

The ongoing work on the driving surface for Interstate 64 through downtown means lane closures again this weekend.

Starting at 10 a.m. tomorrow, the Missouri Department of Transportation will shut down all westbound lanes of the double-deck structure between Broadway and 21st Street. Two eastbound lanes may also close for safety reasons.

The ramps from 10th and 14th streets to westbound I-64 will remain open. All lanes, except for the farthest left, will re-open by Monday's rush hour.

Missouri state and local officials are looking for ways to maintain the state’s transportation infrastructure during a climate of limited funds.

The so-called "Blue Ribbon Citizens Committee on Missouri Transportation Needs" met in Chesterfield and will hold similar meetings around the state this spring and summer.

MoDOT District Engineer Ed Hassinger says the agency has roughly half the money to spend that it did just several years ago.

A central Missouri lawmaker has filed legislation that would allow Interstate 70 to be turned into a toll road.

The measure would allow the state Department of Transportation to contract with a private company to fix I-70 in exchange for being allowed to charge tolls. Sponsoring Sen. Mike Kehoe, a Republican from Jefferson City, says that is the only way the state can afford the improvements the highway needs to accommodate increasing traffic.
