Mo. senator files proposal to allow tolls on I-70

Interstate 70 in Columbia, Mo., between St. Louis and Kansas City. The stretch of interstate between St. Louis and Kansas City could become a toll road under a new proposal.

A central Missouri lawmaker has filed legislation that would allow Interstate 70 to be turned into a toll road.

The measure would allow the state Department of Transportation to contract with a private company to fix I-70 in exchange for being allowed to charge tolls. Sponsoring Sen. Mike Kehoe, a Republican from Jefferson City, says that is the only way the state can afford the improvements the highway needs to accommodate increasing traffic.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers breached the levee at Birds Point as part of the activation of the floodway May 2, 2011.

Army Corps inspecting Birds Point Levee daily

Inspectors with the Army Corps of Engineers are performing daily inspections of the area where the Birds Point levee was intentionally breached in May. Maj. Jon Korneliussen told the Sikeston Standard Democrat that daily patrols are checking the middle and upper crevasses created by the implosion that happened at the height of spring flooding.

MoDOT preparing for winter weather

Winter weather is headed to the St. Louis metropolitan area and crews with the Missouri Department of Transportation are making sure they are prepared.

MoDOT started pre-treating major routes Tuesday with salt brine. This morning trucks are out in full force monitoring the situation, ready to react when the rain, sleet and snow begin.
