Missouri's Latest Abortion Debate Once Again Attracts National Attention

Missouri House approved last week a 72-hour waiting period for abortion. It now goes to the Senate.

For at least 35 years, Missouri has been one of the major battlefields in the ongoing fight over reproductive rights, contraception and abortion.

Based on the last few weeks in Jefferson City, not much has changed.

“Missouri is one of the really hot states, when it comes to abortion restrictions this year,’’ said Elizabeth Nash, state issues manager with the Guttmacher Institute, a research group advocating sexual and reproductive health rights.

Despite Annual March To Washington, Fight Over Abortion Is Being Waged In The States

Tuesday morning, thousands of Missourians — many of them from the St. Louis area — are following a decades-old tradition and boarding buses for an all-night bus ride to Washington.

On Wednesday, the Missouri contingent will join tens of thousands of others from around the country for the annual March for Life in the nation’s capital to protest the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing most abortions.

New science incentives fund declared unconstitutional by judge

A Missouri trial judge has struck down a state fund designed to offer state incentives to science or technology companies.

During a special legislative session last fall, lawmakers approved the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act, also often referred to as MOSIRA. The measure contained a clause that the law would not take effect without the passage of a separate measure, which was not approved.

Those challenging the science fund included the Missouri Roundtable for Life and Missouri Right to Life.

Opponents challenge MOSIRA fund with lawsuit

A lawsuit has been filed that challenges the creation of a new fund to offer state incentives to science or technology companies.

The Missouri Roundtable for Life and Missouri Right to Life said Thursday the new fund should be void.

Legislators created the Missouri Science and Innovation Reinvestment Act this year during a special legislative session.
