Still up in the air: Sunset Hills, a year after the tornado

One year ago tomorrow a rare winter tornado tore through the St. Louis County suburb of Sunset Hills. Since then residents who could repair their homes have moved on, but as St. Louis Public Radio’s Joseph Leahy reports, those who lost everything are still battling city hall for the future of the neighborhood.

Lewis Place finally receiving state aid

Nearly a year after a tornado damaged 91 homes in the area, residents of the Lewis Place neighborhood in north St. Louis are getting some help from the state of Missouri.

The Board of Aldermen on Friday voted to accept $500,000 in state disaster assistance. The city's required $500,000 match came from community development funds. Mayor Francis Slay will sign the measure as soon as he can.

Missouri is getting more than $5 million from the federal government to help in the long-term recovery for people hit by tornadoes and flooding.

The grant announced Wednesday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency will be available to help people hit by tornadoes in the Joplin and St. Louis areas, as well as flooding along the Mississippi River and in southern Missouri.

Nixon asks for federal disaster declaration for New Year's Eve tornadoes

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has asked the president to issue a disaster declaration for areas hit by tornadoes and severe storms on Dec. 31.

Nixon on Friday requested federal individual assistance for people living in Carter, Christian, Dent, Franklin, Phelps, Polk, St. Louis, Stone and Webster counties as well as the city of St. Louis.

Five Missouri residents were killed by the severe weather.

Fenton woman injured in New Year's tornado dies

A Fenton woman injured in the tornadoes that ripped through St. Louis on New Year's Eve has died.

From the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Margaret Birkes, 70, of Fenton died Monday morning at St. Anthony's Medical Center, a spokeswoman there said. According to relatives, Birkes was either going to or leaving a Dierbergs store at Fenton Crossing when the storm struck.

She was badly injured and taken to St. Anthony's.

One MO highway death over New Year's

It was a safer year for motorists traveling on Missouri roads during the New Year's holiday this year.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol announced today that it has reports of just one fatality on the roads between 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve until 11:59 yesterday. Troopers investigated 157 accidents, which also resulted in 70 injuries, and arrested 90 people who were driving drunk.

Beginning Tuesday, officials with the Federal Emergency Management Agency will survey damage from the New Year's Eve tornadoes that demolished homes and businesses across the state.
