Peter Martin Brings Piano Skills To The Garden, Kranzberg

Pianist Peter Martin has a busy week of rehearsals and performances here in St. Louis this week. The University City resident will kick off the annual Whitaker Music Festival Wednesday evening, June 4, then follow that with a concert at the Kranzberg Arts Center Thursday evening, when he and his trio perform with vocalist Vivian Sessoms.

Jazz Unlimited for February 23 will be “The Guitar of Jim Hall, A Tribute to Rich McDonnell and New Music.” Jim Hall will be featured on the first hour, the “Keys and Strings Hour,” bringing you the quieter side of jazz.  Rich McDonnell, founder of the Max Jazz label died recently and we will honor him with some of recordings from the Max Jazz catalog.  The third hour will be new music for February.  Artists heard on the show will be: the Jim Hall trio, the Red Mitchell quintet, duos between Jim Hall and Pat Metheny, Bill Evans and Ron Carter and the Hampton Hawes quartet.  Music in the sec

Vocalist Kim Massie and pianist Peter Martin performed a concert before a sold-out audience in the UMSL at Grand Center Community Room on December 6.  

The entire concert and an interview with Kim Massie will air on Arch City Radio Hour at 9:00 a.m. Monday, December 23 on St. Louis Public Radio’s HD2 Channel, The Gateway. Beginning at that time, the concert and interview will also be available on demand at the St. Louis Public Radio and the Beacon website.

Jazz Pianist Peter Martin To Perform Tribute To Blue Note Records At The Sheldon

Jazz pianist and St. Louis native Peter Martin returns to The Sheldon on Saturday for Peter Martin Music Live: A Blue Note Records Tribute.

Martin will be performing as part of a quartet with a group he hand-picked: guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Ulysses Owens Jr.

"That's the great thing about having your own series," said Martin. "You bring the people you want to play with."

Martin chose to perform a selection of music from the Jazz label Blue Note Records, but had a hard time choosing what music to play.

Kids Rock Cancer is an outgrowth of Maryville University’s Music Therapy Program.  Inspired by the program Purple Song Can Fly in Houston, Texas, the Maryville program goes into hospitals and works individually with children with cancer and other blood disorders.  The musical therapist helps the child express a set of thoughts and ideas, turn them into lyrics of a song and compose a tune for the lyrics.  Then the child gets to sing the song into a microphone with instrumental accompaniment.  The result is a CD recording for t

The Sheldon bills itself as the perfect place for music and art and the Sheldon Concert Hall has been called “The Carnegie Hall of the Midwest.”  This year marks the 100th anniversary of The Sheldon which was named after Walter Sheldon, who founded the St. Louis branch of the Ethical Society.  The building was designed by Louis C. Spiering, the architect of the 1904 World’s Fair.
