Unusual demonstration project looks to promote the growth of urban trees

Workers install "silva cells" at Brightside St. Louis' Demonstration Garden and Learning Center.

Engineers, arborists, and landscape architects from across Missouri and southern Illinois gathered in St. Louis on Thursday for an unusual demonstration project.

Brightside St. Louis is installing “silva cells” outside its Demonstration Garden and Learning Center at the corner of Kingshighway and Vandeventer.

The goal is to promote the growth of urban trees.

Missouri childhood vaccination rates still below average

Missouri is still near the bottom of the pack when it comes to childhood vaccination rates.

The results of the CDC's annual National Immunization Survey show about 68 percent of children under age 3 got all the required vaccinations in 2011. That's about the same as in 2010, and up from 56 percent in 2009.

In Illinois, vaccination rates fell from about 75 percent in 2010 to about 72 percent in 2011.
