Former St. Louis prosecutor dies after gunshot

St. Louis police are investigating the death of a former St. Louis city prosecutor who was shot at her home.

Jessa Schauman died Thursday, a day after police were called to a home she shared with a former St. Louis police officer. She had been shot in the head. Police say that the initial call indicated a suicide attempt, but a preliminary investigation led officers to classify the death as suspicious.

St. Louis Rep. William Lacy Clay took the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives this morning to give a speech on the tragic shootings in Tucson, Ariz.

Clay expressed his condolences for the victims and others involved, along with an appeal to the media "To remember that hateful words often lead to hateful deeds."

The last time they congregated outside like this, the temperatures were in the teens, the wind was howling, and there were four inches of snow on the ground. And they were scared for their lives.
