Union Station Opens And Celebrates National Train Day

Train enthusiasts and history buffs gathered at the re-opening of Union Station yesterday in downtown St. Louis. The newly rehabbed train station and hotel kicked off its inaugural weekend by celebrating National Train Day.

St. Louis’ Union Station Debuts Grand Hall Multimedia Show

The Grand Hall at St. Louis’ Union Station re-opens to the public Saturday with fanfare that includes a 3-D light, video and sound show.

The presentation begins with the sound of a chugging train. You can almost imagine conductors calling “All aboard!” as you start to take in the show on the 65-foot ceiling.

The experience includes a musical soundtrack and narration to slides and video that range from Union Station’s golden days to highlights of a Blues game.

St. Louis Circus Kids Enjoy Union Station Trapeze — And So Can You

Ari Maayan flies through the air with the greatest of ease, a daring young man on the flying trapeze — in the parking lot of St. Louis’ Union Station.

Maayan, 14, is the chief unicyclist with Circus Harmony, an organization with the goal of teaching kids circus skills and life lessons. He’s been with Circus for three years but on Wednesday, he enjoyed his first trapeze swing, complete with a back flip into the net below.

“It was really cool, it’s really like flying,” Maayan said.

Beginning in 1942 and for around three decades – no one seems to know for sure – a massive mural depicting a flurry of commercial activity along the St. Louis riverfront peered down upon the ticket counter at Union Station.

Trains Could Roll Again Soon From Union Station

The new owners of Union Station in downtown St. Louis say excursion trains could be rolling from its platforms this time next year.

St. Louis-based Lodging Hospitality Management purchased the 1894 train station and adjacent hotel in October and plans a $50 million upgrade of the property, though that does not appear to include the cost of rehabbing the canopies over the train tracks and any work that would have to be done to accommodate trains.

St. Louis Union Station sold for $20 million

The sale of downtown St. Louis’ historic Union Station is set to go through in mid-October.  The sale was first reported Wednesday by the St. Louis Business Journal.

The facility’s new owners, St. Louis-based Lodging Hospitality Management,  are hoping to succeed where a host of other developers have failed.

Struggling retail space left out of Union Station redevelopment plan

The $50 million plan to redevelop St. Louis' historic Union Station focuses on improvements to the Marriott Hotel, not the struggling retail space.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the St. Louis Development Corp. board voted 4-0 Thursday to award $5 million in federal tax credits to Lodging Hospitality Management, which has a contract to buy the former train station that was turned into a retail center and hotel.

Sale nears completion for St. Louis Union Station

St. Louis Union Station could soon get a transformation.

The one-time railroad terminal turned into a retail center has been struggling for many years. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that after a bidding process, a sale is nearing completion. Details of redevelopment plans have not been released.

Upcoming St. Louis parade to welcome home Iraq War veterans

A parade will be held in downtown St. Louis on Saturday honoring the men and women that served in Iraq.

The idea for the parade was started by two St. Charles men, Craig Schneider and Tom Applebaum. They approached the veterans group, The Mission Continues, with the idea and they agreed to partner with them to make the parade happen.
