Lance Berkman connects for a three-run homer during a June 23rd blow-out win against the Philadelphia Phillies at Busch Stadium. The Cardinals announced on Thursday that Berkman will return to the team next year.

"Puma" will be back for another season.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that Lance Berkman has signed a one-year contract extension with the club.  The team did not announce any more details, but other reports say the deal is for $12 million. Berkman made $8 million this season.

The 35-year-old Berkman, who spent most of his career with Houston, is among National League leaders in home runs, slugging percentage and batting average. He was a starter in this year's All-Star Game.

"Lance proved to be everything we were looking for when we signed him last December," said general manager John Mozeliak in a statement. "He's an impact player who helped solidify our everyday lineup while also bringing a wealth of experience to our team. We are excited to announce that he is going to remain a part of our team in 2012."
